PPP TASK3 research

Part One

In the beginning I was a bit lost. All I have got in mind was Verdy and Jerry whom I have already. researched into in the previous brief. I began to acknowledged that I am not looking at enough amount of people's work. I do not want to repeat the stuff that I research into as it sounds boring. I began to panic and did not know where to start. I then began to scroll through Instagram and look at posts that I saved that are art and design related. I found some stuff that I appreciated a lot and have forgotten.

1. @frankleboner (b. London, 1993)

Not before this research, I realised that the ahem frankleboner comes directly from his real name Frank Lebon with an er at the end. Love this way of naming himself on social media, making his name sounds way more fun and significant. Frank is a director and a photographer with a strong perusal style. In his art account @frankleboner, he posts some of his work and I believe the account is a really big part of his personal branding and his work exposure. In his captions, he never writes a long paragraph explaining his concept, instead, he includes that date of creation and a few words about the work's title and people he collaborated with in the projects.

In his website, he describes his work as transcends distinction between graphic design, drawing, photo, video, animation and collage. I personally think that his collage work dominates most of his work and his personal branding. Lebon's aesthetic is characterised by ambitious camera work and a meticulous editing process. His methods go beyond the limitations of a project, crating images the melt the possible with the impossible.

Personally, I think his work has a great film element in it. They all look grainy, with a raw and organic aesthetic which looks really cool to me. He makes good u se of collaging and layering methods, some multimedia approach to texturise flat pictures and strengthening the concept in his photography. I can see that working physically with materials, collaging them is his main creative process, while the stage of making it digital is just a way to pull things together and. the final stage of polishing them and presenting them in social media.

2. @luke___casey

website: https://lukecasey.com

Luke is a director and photographer based between London and Hong Kong. I have been following him for quite a while as I am really interested in artists and designers in the local creative industry. It is his IG feed that caught my attention. He mainly posts his work and some of his daily life photography with friends. His Instagram is a mix of his perennial life and his work portfolio.

In his portfolio website, There are photos that he took and videos that he participated in the directing work. There are no captions nor descriptions about the images. I think portfolio websites like this makes people focus on the work's aesthetic and style in a whole.

I think the most significant concept in Luke's work is exploring identity. As he is a London creator who lives in Hong Kong for most of his time, identity should be a big question mark for him too. He incorporates his thoughts and self expression in his work and visualises them through photography and videography. His point of view of being a foreign but not foreign artist in Hong Kong adds depth in his work.

By looking at his IG, I feel likes Luke has an artistic style and takes random photos of his friends and the environment. He makes good use of the surroundings and environment in Hong Kong and make content out of it. I feel like his photography has a tourist vibe in it. He is trying to view Hong Kong as a tourist, which he is, and blending in with local the artists community to create work that is both tourisy and local.

3.  @ryancarlstudio
website:  https://ryancarl.studio/recent-studies

Compared to the previous 2 artists introduced, this artist is quite different. Ryan Carl is a graphic designer whose work focuses on the relationship between typography, shapes and emotions.

He makes good use of negative spaces, hierarchy and typesettings. Most of the visuals his work starts with a word. His expands his work by exploring the meaning if the specific word with the negative space around it and play around with the typesetting to coney the meaning of the word in a vivid way.

I think the main element that makes his work stand out is the smart and simple way of him executing every project. He has a strong sense in visualising abstract messages in a limited space. Only simple shapes and lines are used to convey an abstract message and I think it is a very smart and direct way to express.

Thoughts
Instead of choosing one impressive piece of self-promotion, I believe that the whole personal branding, style, and character would be that so called "impressive piece" of self-promotion. It is about the personality that you find in a creator's work that makes him unique and worthy to appreciate. I also find it really important to build up a presentable social media account that can represent yourself. Social media is basically the biggest part of a designer's image and character and gives people an ideal first impression that you want people to make. It also helps you to find the right audience that appreciates your working style and eventually the right partner and client to collaborate and work with.

Part Two (self-initiated brief ideas)

idea1: (not a brief but a way to brand myself)
- begin to post my own work on my personal instagram account to make it a platform to showcase my work
- so that current followers could see and will not have to waste time and effort to create a new art account and gain new followers
- strengthen self-branding by promoting the idea of my work= me, they are in one as a whole
- also put a link to my portfolio in my bio

idea2:
- make a video that talks about the city that I am living in, or a specific area in HK
- make it feel personal and heartfelt and look artistic with strong visuals aesthetics
- make use of story boards to visualise compositions, camera angles and camera movements

idea3:
- LARP6SARP3
- a brand label  that promote local art and designs
- a graphic tee brand
- with self directed photoshoots to build my  directing skills

idea4:
- work with friends that knows video editing and are good at camera work, learn from them and collaborate with them
- shooting shooting shooting
- strengthen photography and videography skills
- at the same time learn to direct
