[MEMORIESZINE] Further development and printing process

Spreads development

Created a cover r the zine and also few new pages for it. I also played around with blurriness to convey the concept of memories being blurry and forgotten easily. I kept the background clean for these so to leave more space for audience for imaginations and interpretations.

I love these two a lot. I distorted the original image and played around with black and whites. I created two versions of the same photo and they looked very nice to me. They looked like the image melting. I will be making them into postcards for audience who do not want to purchase the whole publication and only want a few pages of it.

Also made 4 back designs for the postcards. I added a line at the back. Each of them has a different line about the theme memories.

File preparation

zine

I separated the images into single pages thinking that it would be easier for the printing company to arrange the pages in order. This process took me the longest as I was not familiar with preparing files for actual printing. I recalled inductions that I took in uni and made bleeds for the pages for better printing results.

postcards

Also placed the postcard designs in the right order for better efficiency when printing.

Printing places

Due to the corona situation, me and Sonja constantly had Skype meetings to discuss different printing places that we found online that could be potential ones. We added them onto the google doc and compared the quotations and prices between different printing places. Apart from the prices, we also. put efficiency and paperstock quality in our considerations.

Potential printing places

- jet tech (big company, little paper stock options)

- print house (mainly does screenprints)

- printing room

We were thinking of printing room as it is the most famous printing p la yes among local design colleges and we thought that would guarantee the quality and efficiency. However, we tried emailing them and turned out their attitude and efficiency were not what we expected and we. thought it would be really hared for us to communicate with them when it comes to the actual printing process.

-----------------------------------

Few days later we had decided to go for jet tech printing as we thought it was the closest to where we live. We went to their shop and talked to the staff. We discussed the best paper stick for printing our zines.

Turned out the zine file that I made was redundant. All they needed was the actual design of each spread without separating them into pages. I then spent like 30minutes to rearrange the spread at the store and got the bleeds format fixed as well. As my zine contains texts,  they also asked me to outline the texts. I have learnt a lot in the process of preparing the actual printing file. Now I know what to do and not to do when preparing ready to print files, and can lessen the preparation time next time when I print stuff.

The staff also taught me about the bleed function on AI. They told me to at least prepare a 3mm bleed next time when I print. She was being super patient and I was really glad.  The whole process took us more than 3 hours.. We didn't expect this... this is our first time taking to printing places and it was a re ally good experience as we learnt lot.
